Matali Crasset

Paris-based Matali Crasset is an unconventional industrial designer – her work has touched nearly every area of design. From products and interiors to architecture and art, she is one of the most acclaimed and intriguing designers of her time!

A graduate of the Ateliers – E.N.S.C.I. (Workshops – National Higher School of Industrial Design), Matali worked with Denis Santachiara in Italy and Philippe Starck in France, before establishing her own studio in Paris, in the heart of Belleville.

With a view of the world that is both expert and always new, Matali routinely questions obviousness. Her designs are never a simple improvement of what already exists, but a well thought out comprehensive solution, using complex logic, modularity, and interconnections.

Always in search of new territories to explore, she collaborates with eclectic worlds, from crafts to electronic music, textiles to fair trade, organizing projects in set design, furniture, architecture, graphics, and fine art.

One clear example of Masset’s spirit of design can be seen in Phytolab, a transparent educational room where students learn the benefits of plant life simply by being surrounded by it. This unique design encourages guests to interact with the plants through gardening, drawing a connection to how we view and care of ourselves. The innovative laboratory embodies Casset’s drive to improve the way we experience design and navigate our surroundings.

A wonderful book, celebrating her extensive body of work is “Matali Crasset: Works“, a monograph spanning 16 years of diverse projects.
